Ou doit-on réagir avec énergie et trouver des moyens pour rendre la vie agréable, malgré tout? La question se pose et elle est légitime. On peut raser les murs, se cacher, se taire, disparaître... Ou on peut faire front commun et proposer des moyens d'être festifs, à prix modique, sans pour autant sacrifier l'esprit de la fête qui est, somme toute, salutaire. Pas besoin d'être riche pour fêter!

Nous avons tous dans nos placards au moins une pomme de terre, un poireau n'est pas un légume à prix exhorbitant, un peu de poudre de bouillon de volaille, de l'eau et, si nous avons prévenu le coup, nous avons surgelé de la ciboulette hachée. Avons-nous oublié combien c'est un luxe que de pouvoir consommer des fruits en hiver? Les histoires de bonnes femmes font état du temps où les cadeaux de Noël se résumaient à une orange dans un bas placé sur la cheminée. Pas les moyens d'acheter des fruits frais? J'ai fait ma salade de fruits avec des fruits en conserves (sauf pour l'ananas qui est à prix plus qu'abordable ces jours-ci). On trouve, à prix modique, des fruits en conserves dans leur jus naturel, sans sucre ajouté. Une boîte de mandarines et de pêches, une boîte de poires, un ananas frais coupé en dés, une banane coupée en rondelles et des cerises au marasquin pour la fantaisie. J'aurai de la salade de fruits pour la semaine, en dessert et au petit déjeuner.

Enfant, à l'école, j'étudiais «les arts ménagers». Qu'est-ce que c'était? Les règles d'hygiène, les bases de la cuisine de tous les jours (et des réceptions), l'art de dresser une table, la gestion économique des produits alimentaires. C'était un cours obligatoire pour toutes les jeunes filles. Ce ne l'est plus et c'est dommage car il nous enseignait l'ingéniosité, une denrée nécessaire lorsqu'on est dans la dèche. Nous vivons, pour la plupart d'entre nous, dans des pays qui se sont dotés de politiques sociales. Par exemple, au Québec, nous sommes le pays le plus imposé en Amérique. Pourquoi? Pour faire en sorte qu'il y ait une aide financière pour les gens qui sont sans ressource, pour les aider à franchir le cap. Nous avons de l'assurance emploi (sauf pour les gens comme moi qui sont travailleurs autonomes), nous avons des prestations d'aide sociale. Les temps sont durs, peut-être ces prestations ne sont-elles pas suffisantes? Il nous incombe alors de faire pression pour que les choses changent, auprès des instances qui ont le pouvoir de modifier la situation, nos représentants élus. Nous payons - ceux qui les paient - jusqu'en août de chaque année nos revenus pour acquitter nos impôts. Intéressons-nous à comment ils sont gérés par les pouvoirs publics. Et partageons notre ingéniosité pour que tous en bénéficient et soient assurés d'une meilleure qualité de vie. Voilà, je pense, ce que c'est que d'être proactifs.

We live, for the most part of us, in countries that have social policies. For example, in Quebec, we pay the highest taxes in America. Why? To ensure that there is financial aid for those who lack financial resources, to help tide them over. We have unemployment insurance (except for those, like me, who are self-employed), we have social insurance. Times are hard and perhaps these benefits are not enough. If that's the case, it's our responsibility to lobby elected officials, those who have the power to make the necessary changes. We pay out - those of us who bother to pay - our income until August of each year to discharge our various tax responsibilities. Isn't it logical to be interested by the way our contributions are managed by public authorities? And why not share our ingenuity so that all benefit and share in a better quality of life? That is, I think, what being proactive is all about.

j'attends avec curiosité ton pudding au pain.
Nous avons reçu pour Noël un gâteau portugais au pain au miel à la cannelle et aux pignons
C'est un travail énorme à faire si j'ai bien compris
et c'est pas mangeable

On peut, si on veut, ajouter plus de crème, JP. Le pouding au pain, ou le pain perdu, n'est pas une recette très compliquée en soi.
